The Almanac, The Husk (Cover me in Time)

Participatory, Durational (3 hours)

PAE (Performance Art Event) in WOLk, Rotterdam

15 June 2024, 1-4pm

Preparations

My action begins on the public footpath at the entrance of WOLk before guests arrive. I smooth the plank with an orange sandpaper and move the irregular shape from tip to tip into the space, through the space, and around; sometimes sideways hidden behind the plank, and other times as if it was an awkward wheel. I then let the plank cover the back of my body as I very slowly crouch down and finally lay face down on the floor. Only one foot is visible. I crawl, inching backwards carefully until the entire plank surface is in contact with the floor…

I position the front of my body flat against the back wall, my hands straight by my sides and proceed to worm my way along the width of the wall. When I finish investigating the lower realms of the room, I gather the objects to prepare for the participatory part of the work: different lengths of sticks, a large bowl, Chinese almanac paper. I fill the large bowl with water from the kitchen, using a smaller glass bowl. I make several trips. With a paint brush and a tube of graphite paint, I write out instructions on the plank…

The main material used is the Chinese calendar paper torn off daily, with details of high and low Lunar activities, horoscope intersections and corresponding solar dates. This collection was from the year 2023.

About PAE

PAE stands for Performance Art Event and is an artist-led platform for performance art in the Netherlands since 2008. PAE has no fixed structure or pattern, but changes depending on the artistic developments and the work of the artists involved. The organisation is currently led by the artists Nina Boas and ieke Trinks, and supported by the artists Kirsten Heshusius and Kamila Wolczszak. Previously we have partnered with several cultural organization, among them are TENT (R’dam), Wolfart Projectspaces (R’dam), Goethe Institute, Alliance Française, De Brakke Grond (A’dam), TETEM (Enschede), Zuidplein Shopping Center (R’dam), Willem de Kooning Academy,  Zone2Sourse (A’dam), WORM (R’dam), and Out of Site (Chicago, USA).

Stichting WOLk is located on Wolphaertstraat 19, Charlois, Rotterdam. Initiated by Pauline Schreurs and Marieke Haandrikman, it is a place where consciousness, contemplorary art and community are central.
